Wild Earth founder Quintin Quider is an expatriate Californian who has spent many years living on the South Island. He has gathered a small, dedicated team to produce his Wild Earth range in Central Otago. Established in 1998, Wild Earth Wines owns 35 hectares of vineyards in two of the region's finest locations - at the end of Felton Road overlooking the Kawarau River and in the North Lowburn district beneath the imposing Pisa Range.
Consistently recognised for their passion and impressive style, Wild Earth most recently won acclaim when winemaker Jen Parr was named New Zealand Winemaker of the Year 2020, by Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine.
Vineyards:
The grapes for this wine come from the 'Terraces' vineyard in Felton Road, Bannockburn. It is planted with predominantly Dijon clones. The combination of the clay, schist, silty loam soils and the alpine climate produce a wine that is one of a kind.
Vinification:
The fruit was hand-harvested from late March to late April. Multiple small ferments were completed with 0 – 40% whole bunches, resulting in a final blend with around 22% whole-bunch inclusion, contributing aromatic lift and fine tannin structure. Time on skins ranged from 18 to 28 days before the wine was pressed and transferred to fine-grain French oak barrels, 20% of which were new, for roughly 12 months of maturation.
Product Features: Vegetarian, Vegan
Tasting Notes:
Deep garnet in colour, the wine opens with alluring aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, cedar, sage, liquorice and wild thyme. The palate is focused and layered, combining vibrant red fruit with dried herbs and earthy complexity, all carried on a concentrated
frame with impressive intensity and length. Silky, fine tannins and lifted aromatics bring finesse and balance to a wine of serious structure and poise.
Food Pairings: Roasted duck, quail, or guinea fowl, lamb, mushroom risottos.
Closure: Screwcap ABV: 14%
